Taken from us...
Kris was a bit younger than me, so I never really took it to heart, but we did have a few good conversations out on Kevin's porch, just about life, love, our crappy jobs...Etc. My favorite thing about Kris was that even though he was a guy's guy, meaning, he played sports, worked out a lot, all that typical boy stuff, he wasn't all obnoxious.
He did drive a motorcycle, which would eventually be the cause of his demise. But he also drove an old Volvo stationwagen, that always cracked me up. This car known for being steady and safe, was the ride of choice of a motorcycle riding young guy...
When I found out that Kris was dead, I was in shock but as unsure how to react as I had been the first time I ever heard a friend of mine had died. I was stationed in Montana the first time that happened. My friend Woody was a Staff Sergeant I met at the gym and we used to hang out ever so often. He was kind squirrelly and talked a LOT, but he was funny and he used to come see me sing at this bar where I did open mike night. It was very shocking when he died because it was a suicide that no one saw coming. Especially not me.
I had spoken to him on the phone about three hours before he had killed himself. Because I was one of the people who he had interacted with on that day, I had to go get interviewed by OSI. I was pretty certain that the conversation we'd had that day had something to do with why he killed himself and I was wracking my brain trying to find some sort of connection. It turned out that his ex-wife had won the child custody case that they had been fighting about for a year. He was just too heartbroken that she was taking his daughter away to live with her and her new husband.
I'm not sure if he actually meant to kill himself. I can't imagine him being the depressed type, but then again you never know what is going on inside someone's head. I know for a fact that Kris did not want to die. He was on his way to see his girlfriend when his motorcycle was hit by a drunk driver. I don't know if he suffered, and I don't know what his last thoughts were, but I'm sure that death was the last thing he wanted.
Today while working on the flyers for Donations for Kris' Memorial Plaque, I was searching our server for photos from his funeral program. While searching I came upon the Alert Photos from his accident. Something, I'm sure, that no one who knew Kris ever should have seen. I only glanced at the photos before realizing what they were and closing the file quickly. But I did see one photo of him, lying on the street and it is the saddest image I've ever seen.
